Jury selection began Thursday in David Carlson's murder trial. Carlson is accused of shooting and killing a fugitive rape suspect in October 2013.

Police say Carlson fired his shotgun twice at Norris Acosta-Sanchez as they walked along the road where Carlson lives with his family near the Pennsylvania border. Carlson says he was escorting Acosta-Sanchez at gunpoint so a neighbor could call police. He says Acosta-Sanchez lunged at him, and says he shot the fugitive in self-defense.

Carlson is facing murder and manslaughter charges.

In 2014, a judge dismissed murder and manslaughter charges against Carlson in the shooting. The judge ruled the grand jury was flawed.

Jury selection is expected to continue Friday.
