DUNKIRK, N.Y. -- After almost a year of planning, the gates opened for the start of the 135th Chautauqua County Fair on Monday in Dunkirk.
"I relate it to Christmas morning. You've done all that shopping and Christmas is here and you're excited to open the presents," Chautauqua County Fair president Dave Wilson said.
Not even heavy rain and a passing thunderstorm could dampen the spirit and excitement on opening day.
"We're almost happy it did rain a little bit. I mean if it's going to rain, rain on Monday, get it over and let's get going," said Wilson.
Fairgoers can expect the return of all their favorite food, rides, attractions and agricultural events, as well as a new high wire act.
"So, between the animals, the entertainment and the grandstand shows, you betcha, a little something for everyone," said Wilson.
"This is the highlight of the 4H year," 4H community educator Kate Ewer said.
Local agricultural leaders say this years 4H theme is superheros of the future, with about 250 members set showcase their skills.
"So, the youth meet all year," Ewer said. "They raise their animals, they go to meetings to learn about how to raise them. They learn about what's happening in the industry."
"Wash her, feed her, brush her," Hannah McChesney said.
McChesney is one of those 4H'ers and has been involved in the group for three years. She cares for her two-year old cow Ginger Ale, there on the left.
"It's a real good experience to work with the animals and to meet people from all over the county," fairgoer Chris McChesney said.
The fair continues through Sunday.
