LOWVILLE, N.Y. -- It was a night to remember for about 150 people as they enjoyed The Arc, Oneida-Lewis Chapter's prom.

"It gives an opportunity for everybody to come out and be with friends and family and spend time together," said Lowville resident Kim Boliber.

Guests enjoyed food, music and plenty of dancing. In true prom fashion, there was even a prom court, complete with a king and queen.

"I honestly didn't think that people would actually vote for me and I was very shocked and very surprised that I got picked," said Lowville resident Michael Matthews.

The Arc, Oneida-Lewis Chapter helps support residents in Oneida and Lewis counties with intellectual and developmental disabilities, from residential services to medical needs. Many of the people there may not have gotten the chance to go to their own prom, so organizers wanted to give them the opportunity to have that one special night.

"One of the big things that we ask for and strive for is community integration. To get them out and have the experiences of going to dinner, going to a dance," said Shannon Kerfien, the Program Manager at The Arc, Oneida-Lewis Chapter.

"It's fun for people with our disabilities to actually have some kind of event that going to make us happy, pleased, and be with everybody else and just have fun." said Matthews.

Even before the night was over, guests were already talking about bringing the prom back next year.

Many guests even helped plan the event, from picking the music to helping with decorations.
