BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The murder trial for Daniel Whiting is now underway. The Lackawanna man is charged with second degree murder for the stabbing death of his wife, Ashley, in July 2015.
In the first day of testimony, Monday, jurors heard the 911 call Daniel Whiting made, saw pictures from inside their home and testimony from the first officer who responded to the murder scene.
In the 911 call, Daniel Whiting told dispatchers a man in dark clothing broke into his home, stabbed him and his wife multiple times. Whiting said he couldn't move his legs and that his wife wasn't moving.
Lackawanna Police Officer Abdul Omar says he discovered Daniel on the floor in the doorway of the master bedroom, holding a cell phone and speaking calmly. Their two young children were also in the bedroom unharmed.
Omar says Ashley Whiting tried to speak to him, but couldn't. She died at the scene.
Omar testified he found a large kitchen knife in the bedroom. Pictures presented as evidence showed the handle of the knife covered in plastic saran wrap.
The pictures also showed the room covered in blood, and the defense asked whether it was possible that first responders tracked the blood elsewhere through the home and compromised the crime scene.
The defense also asked about an open window, and whether it was possible someone could have escaped out of it.
Testimony in the case will resume Tuesday morning.
