HORSEHEADS, N.Y. -- A huge sum of money is on its way to the Elmira-Corning Regional Airport. The facility will receive a $1 million grant from the state as part of a larger initiative to fund airport improvements.
The money will go toward relocating the airport's current fuel facilities. By moving it further away from the airport, there will be additional room for parking. Officials also say it'll be less hazardous for the fuel to be stored further away from the terminals.
"It'd be safer because the large quantity of fuel being stored near the buildings, we'll be able to get that large quantity moved away. It's moving about a quarter of a mile away from its current location," said ELM Airport Director of Operations Bill DeGraw.
Once the funding comes in, the airport will get started on environmental safety checks.
