The Rochester police department is installing a few dozen new surveillance cameras at locations across the city to help keep the streets safe.

Twenty-seven new blue light cameras will go up this summer. Police say the locations were chosen based on input from the community. The city currently has 130 blue light cameras in use. Many of those were placed due to violence, drug dealing and other criminal activity.

The cameras are monitored around the clock at the public safety building and recordings can be used as evidence in criminal cases. Police say the new cameras will be installed over the next few months.
