NEWBURGH, N.Y. -- Verizon workers in Newburgh are beginning a strike Wednesday morning as part of what is being called the largest U.S. strike in years.

Nearly 40,000 workers from New York to Virginia are walking off the job.

It is a culmination of 10 months worth of contract negotiations, which workers say have not resulted in a fair contract.

The workers are protesting the company for moving jobs overseas, consolidating call centers, failing to expand service to customers, and refusing to raise wages.

Verizon has posted a "readiness plan" on their website stating a team has been fully activated and is ready for the strike.
