BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Every year, people in the city of Buffalo look forward to the start of the Easter season at the Broadway Market. The ceremonial ribbon was cut Friday to kick-off two weeks of extended hours and extra vendors.

"It's a time when literally thousands and thousands of people come through the market," said Mayor Byron Brown, D-Buffalo.

"Without Easter, you wouldn't have a Broadway Market and the rest of the year you don't see the huge crowds," said Common Council Member David Franczyk, D-Buffalo.

Many of the shops and bakeries say the Easter season is by far their busiest.

"This is definitely our Christmas as it would be for other retail stores," said Ania Gurnar, Chrusciki Bakery owner.

"Unfortunately, during the year there isn't much traffic at all, but it seems like an Easter tradition that everybody comes to the market," said Pauline Popiela, Amber Gems and More.

Tony Krupski, who has played his accordion at the market during Easter time for the past five year, says there's something for everyone.

"People of all nationalities come here, you don't have to be Polish to take part in this tradition. There's so much going on and there's a lot of tradition people enjoy," said Krupski.

The Broadway Market will be open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. the two Sundays before Easter and open until 7 p.m. on Holy Thursday and Good Friday.
