EVANS, N.Y. -- The Evans Police Department has some new military vehicles to help them travel through heavy snowfall. They now have a pair of refurbished Humvees on the road thanks to a federally-funded program.

Officers realized they needed something more then their normal squad cars during last year's winter storm. The department then joined the 1033 program, an initiative that donates used military equipment to local police agencies.

Department leaders say the program's donations will come in handy with snowfall expected in their area.

"Inclement weather situations, search and rescue type things like that. We decided to go out and its been in the works since the 1990's this program. We said other police agencies are using it locally, that why not go out and get something that is free and very valuable to us," said Evans Town Police Lieutenant Mike Masullo.

Two local businesses dedicated its services to help repair the used vehicles by fixing dents, sanding and repainting.
