BUFFALO, N.Y. – Six adults and five children are without a home as Buffalo fire investigators are still trying to determine what caused a fire that spread to two houses late Thursday morning.
City crew members say the flames started in a home on Herkimer Street around 11:30 a.m. The fire spread to a neighboring house by the time the firefighters got there.
The residents got out safely, but two dogs died and a third is unaccounted for.
“We want to save persons’ lives. We want to save animal’s lives,” Buffalo Fire Commissioner Garnell Whitfield Jr. said. “Not to be able to accomplish that, obviously, is a very frustrating and difficult part of this job.”
Residents in the homes are being helped by the Red Cross.
Officials continue to investigate into what may have caused the fire.
