As the holiday season approaches, the NYPD is warning New Yorkers that one of the year's hottest gifts is actually illegal to ride here in the city.

Police and city Department of Transportation officials say hoverboards fall under a city ban on recreational motorized scooters.

However, the law defines motor scooters as having handlebars and being "capable of exceeding fifteen miles per hour."

They do not include things like wheelchairs and other devices to help mobility.

State law requires all motor vehicles to be registered with the state DMV.

If they can't be registered, they can't be permitted on streets and sidewalks.

Getting caught riding a hoverboard in the city could set you back as much as $500.
