NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. – The Niagara County SPCA says there are more cats than people in Niagara Falls, and they say something needs to be done to deal with the overflow.
Niagara SPCA Director Amy Lewis says the recent “explosion” of feral cats is the result of a lack of spaying and neutering.
The Niagara SPCA already does two clinics a week, where they spay and neuter 40-50 cats, but they say it’s not enough.
The animal control office is looking to control the cat population with affordable spaying and neutering programs for residents through grants.
“They’re pretty much over run by cats,” Lewis said. “Someone recently described it as an epidemic. We are estimating around 60,000 cats in the city of Niagara Falls, which recently we actually found out is more than the human population.”
With more cats than people, they say they need to work on the problem sooner than later.
