A bicyclist is dead and another cyclist is injured after being hit by a boat trailer that broke free from an SUV on Staten Island.
The accident happened shortly before 5:30 p.m. Monday on Hylan Boulevard at Redgrave Avenue in Bay Terrace.
Police say the SUV was moving from the right to the center lane when the trailer it was pulling became detached.
The trailer hit a 22-year-old woman on a bike.
Then it kept going and hit 21-year-old Alexa Cioffi, who was also riding a bike.
She was pinned underneath.
We spoke to some of her friends.
"They are still absorbing what happened. I've said it before: it's the single most horrific tragic event a family can experience," said family friend Dawn Bartkowski.
"She was considered a sister to me and like I said we have an extended family, whether we don't have the same last name but we are a family like, we just have to stick together," said Cristina Catalano, a friend of Cioffi's older sister.
Both women were taken to a nearby hospital where Cioffi was pronounced dead.
The other cyclist, who was Cioffi's friend, is in critical condition.
Police say the driver remained on scene and they are still investigating.
