FARMINGTON, N.Y. -- Big, bittersweet changes are coming to the Farmington community. Tops announced it will be taking over the long-time Wade's Market.
For nearly five decades, Wade's Market has filled up pantries around Ontario County. The market started more than 50 years ago in what is now a car dealership.
In July, owners announced Wade's would close its doors by the end of October. On Tuesday, Tops announced it will be taking over operations and begin renovations in November. The doors are expected to reopen around Thanksgiving.
"I feel for people," Tyro said. "My step dad works here for 35 years and I worked here in high school, so it will be a little sad that it's not Wade's anymore, but we will be all right."
That seemed to be the general consensus.
"I'm happy for Farmington because I think it will be good for it, but I am sad for Wade's," said Mariam Velez of Farmington.
Shoppers seemed relieved the guessing game of what would fill the 52,000 square foot space is over.
"We never thought it would be a Tops," said Velez. "We thought it would be like a Save-A-Lot or a PriceRight."
For each year over the past five years, up to 100 homes have been built in Farmington. Town leaders said this new Tops will only help the area grow even more.
"We know there is a draft plan by the people who own this property that they've presented to the town, so this whole property will be developed," said Peter Ingalsbe, deputy supervisor for the town of Farmington.
Tops already has plans for a gas station to be completed by next spring. It's been made clear no matter which logo hangs on this building, the nostalgia of Wade's won't ever be discounted.
"Wade's had the community feel and a lot of people who works there are from the community and we are going to miss that," Ingalsbe said. "But, Tops has a good reputation and we're hoping for the very best."
Tops also announced it will offer employment to the 150 Wade's workers who will lose their jobs.
Time Warner Cable News has reached out to the current owners of Wades who said they will be announcing their own plans later this week.
