WURTSBORO, N.Y -- A fire broke out Wednesday afternoon at a popular Catskills resort in Sullivan County.

"We saw smoke coming out of the side of the building by the time we got back there the whole back of the building was involved with flames already," said camper Bob VanDyke.

Dozens of crews responded to the call of a working fire at the Catskills Adventure Resort in Wurtsboro just after 2 p.m. Inside of the building is an office as well as a kitchen and dining area.

"I would say there's approximately about 35 to 40 firefighters here right now as you can see the building upon arrival was fully involved so there wasn't much we could do but to make an exterior attack right now," said Bill Lothrop, Battalion 5 deputy fire coordinator.

VanDyke is from West Michigan and had been traveling all day from Rhode Island to get to the resort. Seeing the building in ruins was not the start he had hoped for for his one week stay.

"I was just walking away because the door was locked and all of a sudden a man screamed at me to go get my fire extinguisher," he said.

Fire crews were able to contain the fire with a couple of hours, but the building was destroyed. No one was injured.

"Nobody has been hurt, just very hot and overcome with heat exhaustion but other than that everybody is fine," assured Lothrop.

As for the rest of the camp grounds, officials say it's business as usual. The cause of the fire is being investigated.
