BUFFALO, N.Y. --Jeffrey Basil was sentenced to 18 in prison today for the death of Air National Guardsman William Sager Junior.

Basil pleaded guilty to first degree manslaughter last month after his murder conviction in the case was set aside.

In court Basil apologized to Sager's family, however Sager's fiancé said Basil has shown absolutely no remorse.

Basil said he wasn't going to make any excuses and wanted the court to know he is sorry for what happened.

In June, Basil admitted to intending to seriously injure Sager when he pushed him down the stairs at Molly's Pub in May of 2014, causing his death.

Basil faced a possible sentence of between 15 and 21 years in prison based on the plea deal reached in the case after his murder conviction was overturned. That happened once the court learned one of the jurors failed to disclose information about her background, including her military experience.

In an emotional statement about the impact of Sager's death, his fiancé said Basil stole her husband from her and their future together.

"I was with him when he took his last breath...it's not okay" said Erika Webster fiance of William Sager Jr.

"He has always been remorseful for what happened...and he is genuinely remorseful" said Joel Daniels the attorney for Jeffrey Basil.

Daniels thinks Basil received a fair sentence. He says Basil will get credit for the year

he's served and is required to serve 6/7ths of his sentence.
