BUFFALO, N.Y. -- One of Joseph Gant's alleged victims took the witness stand Tuesday as his murder trial got underway. Gant is accused of shooting four teens in Aug. 2014 on Oakmont Avenue in Buffalo.

"This defendant unleashed a torrent of bullets, 10 bullets, at a crowd, for no legitimate reason whatsoever," said Colleen Curtin Gable, prosecuting attorney.

Jurors heard two very different descriptions Tuesday of what happened Aug. 12, the day Raymond Patterson III was killed and three other teens were injured by gunfire. Patterson was 14.

"They put him in danger and he had to make a choice if he was going to live or die," said defense attorney Anthony Pendergrass, of his client.

The prosecution says Gant was taking video of two girls fighting near the footbridge between the Kenfield-Langfield Housing Projects and Roosevelt Park, when a man named Eric Graham told him he shouldn't be recording them. Prosecutors said another fight broke out, and Curtin Gable says Gant made a deadly decision.

"He chose to pull out a gun, a pistol, which he had brought with him. People saw the gun and they scattered," Curtin Gable said.

The jury was shown video of the girls fighting, and the mother of one of the girls identified Gant in the video. Though it can't be seen in the video, she testified she saw Gant shooting.

Patterson's younger brother, Dae'mone, also took the stand and testified that the two were playing basketball at Roosevelt Park with some other boys that day when Ray heard gunshots and started running.

"Ray Patterson dropped right there on the footbridge, fatally injured, with a bullet that tore through his back, and came out his chest, as well as two others," said Curtin Gable.

Dae'mone said he followed Ray, and crouched down next to him after he was shot.

"Dae'mone Patterson tried to run and get his mom, but he realized he was shot through his left ankle," said Curtin Gable.

Dae'mone testified that he, his brother nor any of the other boys they were with had gotten into a fight or had a gun that day.

"But Raymond Patterson III, ladies and gentlemen of the jury, is not innocent here," said Pendergrass.

Pendergrass says Gant was recording the girls fighting to prove one of the girls wasn't the aggressor, but he was singled out because he wasn't from the Langfield neighborhood.

"You will learn that not only did Eric Graham attack Mr. Gant, but a number of people attacked Mr. Gant. And some say, up to 30 people," Pendergrass said.

Pendergrass says Gant was being beaten from every direction.

"What more could he do but defend himself?" asked Pendergrass.

The prosecution says the evidence shows there was only one gun involved that day, but the defense strongly disputes that.

"You will see, that young Mr. Raymond Patterson III died like this, he died with his hand in a trigger position," Pendergrass said.

Pendergrass says since everyone from the neighborhood knows each other, someone picked up that gun.

A Buffalo police detective testified that it's possible the EMTs moved Patterson's body when attempting to revive him. The jurors were also shown pictures of the scene, which include multiple shell casings collected as evidence.

When asked by the defense, the detective testified he couldn't say if a revolver was present that day, but according to witnesses, no one else had a gun.

Testimony continues Wednesday.
