Syracuse police are continuing to search for the suspect who shot a man multiple times near Delaware Elementary School Friday. It happened right around the time the school was letting out. Elizabeth Jeneault explains why many are calling the incident disturbing.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- A Syracuse neighborhood remains in shock following a frightening incident that took place just steps away from Delaware Elementary School's playground.

"Officers responded to a report of a shooting here," said Syracuse Police Lt. Eric Carr. "They discovered a 30-year-old man who had been shot multiple times lying in the street."

The man was then rushed to University Hospital.

No children were injured in the chilling incident. However, neighbors said the shooting had left them on guard.

"It is scary," said Genevieve Eamer, a resident. "It's sad. Especially when you're a single mother that works hard your whole life to keep your kids out of that kind of stuff and to see it so close to home, it's really scary."

Kids who attended the elementary school said they couldn't imagine how scared students there must have been when the shots were fired.

"Because, like, if we got shot, we would be scared and then you might lose your life," said Jordan Correa, a 13-year-old.

Police said Friday that they understand the community's fears.

"It's always concerning, especially if children are involved or could possibly be in the area," said Carr. "Anytime there's a shooting, it's obviously a concern."

Anyone with information about the incident is being asked to call (315) 442-5222. According to police, the suspect was last seen heading west on Fitch Street. He was wearing a dark colored sweatshirt with a red shirt underneath.
