For more than 100 years, Central New Yorkers have been waiting in long lines at Heid's in Liverpool for a taste of their famous hotdogs and coneys. But this summer, the iconic restaurant will be taking their food to the streets of Syracuse. As Alexa Green explains, a new mobile food trailer will help the venue serve even more hungry customers
LIVERPOOL, N.Y. -- Chances are if you head to Heid's in Liverpool on a summer day, you're sure to be greeted by a long line of customers.
"It's been a family tradition of mine forever. Everyone I know comes here. Most people here get their food and then go over to the park," said Camillus resident Nathan Rice.
"We'd go and maybe eat the hot dog across the street or eat it right here, outdoors or indoors. The funny thing is that they havn't changed one thing. The place still looks the same," added DeWitt resident Polly Komar.
Come the beginning of May, the iconic restaurant will be hitting the open road with their food.
Last week, Heid's general manager picked up their new custom-made mobile food trailer in Tennessee. Since then, employees have been training in the space and getting used to their new work environment.
"All the equipment is the same so it's not that we have to get used to the equipment, we just have to get used to the flow, see how it's going to work, work out any kinks," said general manager Pat Winslow.
As for the menu of the mobile food trailer, Winslow says it will be a bit more limited. But will feature all of Heid's staples including Hoffman hotdogs and coneys.
"It's going to basically depend of the event because when we go to the New York State Fair, we don't want to serve things that everybody else has" said Winslow.
For long-time customers, they say they're thrilled they'll be able to enjoy the treasured treats more often.
"Heid's will make it. I think it will be good. Wherever they go, they will sell their hotdogs," said Komar.
The mobile food trailer will make its first debut in the parking lot of Heid's sometime in May.
As for the first event it will be featured at, that will take place this June at the Taste of Syracuse.
Five employees will be able to work in the trailer at one time.
Construction on the custom-made trailer took four months to be completed.
