1. Amazon teamsters authorize strike at four SoCal warehouses

Nearly a week before Christmas, workers at four Amazon warehouses located in Southern California are threatening to go on strike Wednesday on claims the corporate giant refuses to recognize their union and negotiate fair contracts, officials announced Wednesday.

The International Brotherhood of Teamsters, representing 1.3 million workers across the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico, announced their members in Palmdale, Victorville, Industry and San Bernardino voted to authorize strikes — a move that came after Amazon ignored a Sunday deadline to come to the bargaining table, according to the union.

"The corporate elitists who run Amazon are leaving workers with no choice," Teamsters General President Sean M. O'Brien said in a statement.

Eileen Hards of Amazon said in a statement that for more than a year, Teamsters have continued to intentionally mislead the public — claiming they represent "thousands of Amazon employees and drivers" when they don't.

2. Rep. Katie Porter wins 5-year restraining order vs. ex-boyfriend

Rep. Katie Porter, D-Irvine, was granted a five-year restraining order Tuesday against an ex-boyfriend who lived with her, claiming a barrage of harassment since their break-up, including false herpes allegations.

Orange County Superior Court Judge Elia Naqvi granted the restraining order against Julian Carl Willis, 55, of Surf City, New Jersey, on Tuesday when Willis failed to respond or attend the hearing. The restraining order is set to expire Dec. 17, 2029.

Last month, Orange County Superior Court Judge Stephen Hicklin extended the restraining order to Porter, her family, and current and former staff, but Willis could still contact the staffers on issues that are not personal and government-related.

Willis told Politico last month that Porter filed for the restraining order in an effort to prevent him from suing her and seeking court protection from her, accusing her of aggressive and "violent" behavior toward him and her own children at UC Irvine in August.

3. Jurupa Valley vegetation fire burns 30 acres

A vegetation fire in Jurupa Valley burned approximately 30 acres Wednesday evening with 20% containment and forced several evacuations.

The Soto Fire was reported around 7:45 p.m. Tuesday in the 4600 block of Soto Street, near and Sedona Drive, Cal Fire reported.

“Crews are making progress and establishing control lines and will remain on scene overnight,” according to the Riverside County Fire Department.

Evacuation orders are in place for Camino Real and the following cross streets: Laurel Ridge Drive, Pebblewood Court, Cottontail Court, Black Hills Drive and Sundance Drive, the department reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, according to Cal Fire.

4. Multiple top players confirmed at American Express tournament

Organizers announced commitments from several top-ranked golfers for the 2025 American Express tournament.

World No. 2 Xander Schauffele, who won two majors this year, will be among the field at the multi-venue event, held from Jan. 16-19 at the PGA West's Pete Dye Stadium Course, Jack Nicklaus Tournament Course and La Quinta Country Club. Schauffele had 15 top-10 finishes this season and hasn't missed any of his last 56 cuts, the longest active streak on the PGA Tour.

He will face opponents including top-ranked Scottie Scheffler, who was previously confirmed at the event. Scheffler was named PGA Tour Player of the Year last week following an impressive 2024 campaign, including his second green jacket at the Masters.

Defending champion Nick Dunlap was also previously confirmed to be returning to the Coachella Valley event.

Daily passes start at $60, and children under 16 receive free access if joined by a ticket-purchasing adult.
