ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — The day you get married is usually pretty memorable, but one couple made things extra special by celebrating their union at a place special to their hearts: a Buffalo Bills game.
It’s a day Cathy and Stephen MacWilliams will never forget.
“We looked at each other we said ‘why wait? Let’s just go ahead and get married. [At the] next home game,”’ Cathy said. “And he said, ‘are you serious.’ I said, ‘yeah.”
Cathy lives in Mount Jackson, Penn., while Steve in Canandaigua. The long-distance couple had been dating for three years and had been talking about tying the knot for a while. They set the date for November 21. The venue itself was important. The Bills’ stadium is the MacWilliams’ second home. That’s why Steve chose a special suit for the occasion.
"I've had that suit actually for quite a few years now,” Steve said. “So I decided, actually, I was going to wear that to the game, where we got married in the parking lot. I thought that was the best appropriate outfit I could find and I thought that was great.”
Both Cathy and Steve have been Bills fans for their entire lives. In fact, the first time they met was at a Bills game. They actually got married in the exact spot in the parking lot where they met.
“It was just kind of meant to be for us,” Cathy said. “It was how we met, I figured it was just a great ending to it. You know, to seal the deal with it.”
“I think it’s a great place,” Steve said. “It’s the place we met, [and now the] place we married. That doesn’t happen too often, especially at a Bills game.”
The MacWilliams encourage others to be creative with their weddings.
