BUFFALO, N.Y. — Habitat for Humanity is teaming up with Kaleida Health to continue helping families find reasonably priced housing.
Monday was the first house dedication with Habitat's new partner, the Fruit Belt Community Land Trust.
The house is being purchased by a family who has put in more than 400 hours of "sweat equity" into building what is now their home.
Habitat for Humanity explains this is made possible through the land trust, which means even if this family decides to sell the house, it will still be affordable for its next owner.
"It's a way to make sure that we don't have gentrification in our neighborhoods. And that neighborhoods that are close to assets like the medical campus that have the potential to become very popular and overpriced. And the neighbors, and the residents that are getting pushed out. The land trust is one way to make sure that doesn't happen," said Executive Director Teresa Bianchi.
"This is such a great opportunity. We are so thankful to have somewhere that is ours. That our kids can be. Have a yard and just a whole house," said new homeowner Latifah Giles.
As homeowners, the family will pay off their mortgage during the next 30 years, but it will be interest-free.
