BUFFALO, N.Y. — Buffalo Police shooting a man after he allegedly struck an officer with a baseball bat during a mental crisis call Saturday downtown has prompted calls for Mayor Byron Brown and Police Commissioner Byron Lockwood to resign immediately.

Members from Free the People Coalition of Western New York held a press conference Sunday on the steps of City Hall Sunday to call for them to leave office.

They're also requesting that the city removes the crisis intervention team and uses all funding from that to create a crisis response team independent from the police.

Members say the Buffalo Police are not capable of dealing with people suffering a mental health crisis without resorting to the use of excess force.

"We don't want money in a crisis intervention team that continues to fund police to the tune of $143 million. We need social workers on the streets, services on the ground," said India Walton of Buffalo.

The group says it's imperative that de-escalation and non-violent strategies are used to resolves crises when it comes to people battling mental health issues.
