In Niagara Falls, the Maid of the Mist has been continuously operating since 1885 — and even a pandemic did not break that streak. They launched for its 135th consecutive season this year, but of course, there will be more safety precautions.

Hundreds of people lined up for the first trip of the 2020 season on the Maid of the Mist.

What You Need To Know

  • The Maid of the Mist has launched its first boat trip of the season

  • The pandemic caused a delay to the season, the longest since 1955

  • Rides will take off at 50 percent capacity, with all occupants wearing masks

  • People are encouraged to buy tickets online

But just a few weeks prior, people weren’t sure if it was going to happen or not.

The last time the season launched this late was in June of 1955. That was because of ice booms.

Of course, this year, it’s because of the pandemic. Staff had to get a safety plan approved by the governor’s office and state park office before they could open.

If you are riding this year, everyone on board must wear a mask.

Rides will operate at 50 percent capacity, but that still allows up to 230 people.

Elevators to the observation deck and landing will also operate at 50 percent capacity. Countertops and credit card keypads will be cleaned after every use, as well as other touchpoints to be sanitized often.

And if people can follow these safety guidelines, they will still be able to get that iconic experience and an up-close look at Niagara Falls.

Hours will also be limited. They will operate 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and rides will depart every 30 minutes. People can buy tickets in person, but they’re encouraged to buy online. The Maid of the Mist store will remain closed for now.

And later this season, two new all-electric emission-free vessels will be placed into service. That launch date is still to be determined.
