KENMORE, N.Y. — Monday, March 21 is World Down Syndrome Day and Gigi's Playhouse in Kenmore will be lighting up the night with a special celebration.

Gigi's is all about inclusion and on this day they're holding some fun festivities as a reminder to look past limitations and celebrate individual achievements.

Down syndrome occurs when there are three copies of the 21st chromosome, so on 3/21, the entire community is invited to celebrate that uniqueness with live music, games and a theme of acceptance for all.

From Niagara Falls to the Peace Bridge, iconic monuments in the city and around the globe will glow in blue and yellow to show support on World Down Syndrome Day.

With more than 56 locations across the country, Gigi's Playhouse Buffalo opened in 2019 to provide free resources to individuals with disabilities. Organizers say the goal is to change the way the world views people with down syndrome and highlight the abilities of those with extra chromosomes.

“Awareness is key," said Will Mondschein, board of directors president at Gigi's playhouse. "Down syndrome is the most diagnosed chromosomal issue out there. It's also the least funded and it's also one where it's very visible. People you know, people you can tell the facial structures, you can tell that individuals have down syndrome when you meet somebody with down syndrome and an event like this in an organization like this helps people look past that.”

The party kicks off Monday at 4 p.m.
