Pine Grove Middle School in the East Syracuse-Minoa District, underwent some big-time renovation work: $29 million worth of renovations that added space and included the latest in green infrastructure to bring the 1969 building into the 21st century.

"We’ve included a low-velocity displacement system for comfort and energy efficiency. That means you’re bringing conditioned outside air into the room at floor level and it exits the room above the occupied area," said ESM Director of Facilities John Young III.

They’ve also included energy recovery wheels on the heating and ventilation system plus a new filtration system to enhance air quality creating a healthier environment for students and staff.

"We’re capitalizing on daylighting through increased surface area on the glass as well as skylight installations," said Young.

LED lighting systems were installed inside and outside the building.

The 12,000 square foot building addition is also designed for multiple uses.

"During the day, it’s our large group space. We can use it for assemblies. We use it for our lunch periods in the middle of the day and by evening it turns into our performing arts center," said Pine Grove Principal Doug Mohorter.

All of it is designed to help students understand the importance of conserving energy.

"Understanding those technologies are available and that is becoming more a part of their world," said Mohorter.

A garden roof and water reclamation system will be installed in the next couple of years.
