The weather’s getting a little warmer and the days are getting longer, which can only mean one thing: It’s almost time for Six Flags Darien Lake to open for the season.

New this year is the Sky Screamer, the state’s tallest thrill ride.

It goes up 24 stories into the air at a speed of 35 miles per hour.

“We’re gonna take you from the ground in a chained seat, kind of like the old swing at the fair, but this is like a supersized ride,” said Larry Chickola, the park’s vice president and chief engineer. The ride will “take you up 242 feet, run you around like a circle. You get a view of the whole area and have quite a thrill.”

The ride lasts about three minutes.

Darien Lake opens for the season on Saturday, May 4, but visitors will have to wait until May 18 to check out the view from the Sky Screamer.
