ONTARIO, N.Y. -- The superintendent of the Wayne Central School District is recommending the school board close one of its two elementary schools to save money.
Superintendent Mathis Calvin thinks closing Freewill Elementary School in Walworth is the way to go.
The school houses kindergarten through fifth grade with about 300 students.
"Having a single campus presents a lot of opportunities for the district," said Amy Gebhardt, Wayne Central School District. "We'd have all of our elementary staff in one place so they could collaborate more. We could have more course offerings for our kids. It's provides a lot more opportunity to unify the entire district."
The board is expected to take up the recommendation at a meeting Thursday.
If the board doesn't approve the move the superintendent would need to come back with another idea.
