BUFFALO, N.Y. — Many people in Buffalo were up early to vote Tuesday on Election Day.

The Unitarian Universalist Church has been seeing a steady stream of people as soon as the polls opened at 6 a.m.

Nearly 40,000 people have already cast their ballot before Election Day, an increase from 2019, when just over 26,500 residents took part in early voting.

Even in the early hours on Tuesday, voters say they're very interested in this year's election because of several key races. Also, it's simply because they want to make sure their voices are heard.

"I'm out here because I think it's pretty much every American's right and responsibility to vote," said voter Hannah Elsinghorst. "I think if we want change, we have to be the ones out there voting for change."

"It's an interesting election," said Josh Meggesto, another voter. "I guess it's a little bit different than I think most election cycles than I've seen in Buffalo for the mayoral race. I think this is an interesting pivot point for Buffalo right now. I think it's important to have good leadership. So I want to make sure I do my part to ensure that happens."

Spectrum News 1 will be keeping a close eye on the races. Polls are open until 9 p.m.
