GENEVA, N.Y. -- An arrest has been made in the shooting of a local boxer in Geneva earlier this year.

Police say Nelson Mateo, 21, of Geneva shot Aleem Whitfield on Linden and Seneca Streets back in April. Whitfield sustained leg injuries.

Whitfield, 24, is a local boxer nicknamed "The Hammer." Police believe he may have been a target from an earlier fight.

Mateo was arrested after a seven-month investigation and charged with several felonies, including assault, criminal possession of a weapon and criminal use of a firearm.

Now, police say Mateo is in custody at Ontario County Jail on an unrelated, unlawful imprisonment charge.

He's being held on $50,000 cash bail.
