BATAVIA, N.Y. — New York State is set to open a pop-up mass vaccination site at Genesee Community College Friday where the new Johnson & Johnson vaccine will be administered.

There are no more appointments available for the site, which some local residents are not happy about on social media.

The Genesee and Orleans County health Department says the clinic was supposed to be focused on eligible residents in Genesee, Orleans, and Wyoming counties, but the state never clarified that.

On Facebook, Assemblyman Steve Hawley explained to an upset resident about the confusion and expressed his own frustration saying:

"The State, @ the last minute, opened it to anyone. Shameful because our rural counties % of vaccinated is languishing far behind more populated areas."

In the initial announcement from the governor’s office, it was not clear whether the clinic was supposed to be restricted. But it did say that the sites are in areas where the state needs additional options for residents.

A total of 3,500 Johnson & Johnson doses will be administered at the GCC site and the other two pop-up locations in Olean and Poughkeepsie, New York.

The clinic will be open from noon to 4 p.m. Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday and Tuesday.

The Johnson & Johnson vaccine only requires one shot instead of two like the Pfizer and Modern vaccines.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo says the Johnson & Johnson vaccine's ease of storage and administration will help the state simplify the process and get more people vaccinated faster.

The Genesee and Orleans County Health Department has spoken up about getting vaccine supply in rural areas and hopes this clinic will make a difference in getting more residents in the area vaccinated.
