Now that Gov. Andrew Cuomo intends to extend the closure of public school buildings in New York State to May 15, teachers will be adjusting.

That means Physical Education teachers in the Ken-Ton School District are having to get creative to keep kids moving.

At Herbert Hoover Elementary school they created their own youtube channel to make it easier to store and share materials with students. The state mandates that kids grades K-3 need daily physical activity, so teachers created an activity calendar for students to follow and do on their own.

P.E. teacher Heather Ratka says their biggest challenge is coming up with activities that all kids can complete as they don't know what equipment families have access to.

Parent Greg Koudounas says it's about keeping their kids engaged and getting the whole family involved.

“It’s a good way. They see their teachers giving instruction through the video and then a lot of times it’s referred to workout programs they are designing to fit the kids. A few times me and my wife tried to do the workout and we realized we are out of shape so it has been a good opportunity for us to get involved too," said Koudounas.

Ratka says they have participation from 68 percent of kids in their classes, but they're working on getting that to 100 percent.
