RANDOLPH, N.Y. — A Vietnam war veteran from Cattaraugus County was posthumously honored Saturday with the dedication of a bridge in his name.

A three-time Silver Star recipient and Randolph native, Sgt. David Lockwood was 19 years old when he was drafted to the Vietnam War.

State Senator George Borrello and Assemblyman Joseph Giglio co-sponsored the legislation to name the I-86 bridge, which crosses Schoolhouse Road in Randolph, after him.

They announced the designation at the Randolph American Legion on Saturday.

Borrello said that years after Lockwood was in service, he started attending reunions with his fellow service mates, making a longstanding impact on the community.

"And while we really can't fully express our gratitude to Sgt. Lockwood and those who have served," Borrello said. "Today, we know his legacy will live on with this dedication."

Following Lockwood's service, he graduated from Rochester Institute of Technology and worked as a mechanical engineer.

Lockwood even had a hand in working on the very bridge now named after him.

He lived in Genesee County with his wife and two daughters until he died in 2018.
