The Niagara County Legislature is creating a task force that will work with the county sheriff's department on police reform, following protests over police relations in communities across the country.

All members of the county legislature will be a part of the newly created task force, along with the Niagara County sheriff, district attorney, public defender and emergency services director.

All three cities and 12 towns in the county will appoint a representative to serve on the task force.

Acting Sheriff Michael Filicetti says his office has been talking about reform solutions since Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed an executive order on June 12 requiring a reform plan from all police departments across the state.

"What we'll do is work on changes. Implementing new training, new community outreach, policing strategies…once those are put together and we have a rough draft of what that'll look like,” Filicetti said. “We will then work with this committee that's being voted on tonight, the makeup of this committee, and get to a final plan."

The task force is expected to have a plan ready by the end of 2020.
