NORTH TONAWANDA, N.Y. – A local plant is set to be shut down this March resulting in the loss of 70 jobs.

NRG Energy announced the upcoming closing of their Huntley Generating Plant in Tonawanda in August.

Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz and other local officials wrote a letter to express their concerns to the New York Public Service Commission Friday. They’re trying to gain insight on the rationale behind the plant’s closing and the future of the county’s electric grid.

“They’re saying that closing would be depended upon the importation of power from Canada as well as Pennsylvania and we question how the reliability of our network cannot be impacted, as the Public Service Commission states, if they are requiring the importation of power from outside our area,” Poloncarz said.

The letter also included questions regarding the possibility of alternative fuel sources for the Huntley Plant.
