The Western New York community continues to honor the 10 people killed in the racist mass shooting in Buffalo last year.
Bills Hall of Fame legend Bruce Smith's second annual celebrity golf tournament raised money for the Lt. Aaron Salter Memorial Scholarship. Salter was a retired Buffalo Police Officer. He was working security at Tops when he died trying to protect people from the gunman.
Friends and former colleagues are working to keep his legacy alive by providing scholarships to kids in the City of Buffalo. Smith quickly joined the cause.
"To be able to play a small part in helping to impact the lives of the youth of those he held near and dear to his heart, it's a good feeling," said Smith.
"He served the community," said Earl Perrin, president of the Lt. Aaron Salter Memorial Scholarship. "So even after retirement, he served and put his life on the line to serve and protect the community. So I think keeping his memory alive is totally appropriate."
The memorial scholarship group held a 5K and half-marathon earlier this month to raise money for the fund. The scholarship helps graduating seniors from financially disadvantaged backgrounds.
