DURHAM, N.C. – A trench at a construction site collapsed on four workers Wednesday morning near Brier Creek, killing one worker and injuring at least two others.
Fire department officials confirmed that rescue workers found the body of the fourth worker Wednesday afternoon.
The collapse occurred in a shopping center at Glenwood Avenue and TW Alexander Drive near the Wake and Durham county line.
"There were four workers in the trench at the time it collapsed. One got out on his own, one was extricated fairly quickly by fire crews and was walked to Wake County EMS," Durham Fire Department Deputy Fire Chief Chris Iannuzzi said.
It took more than 30 minutes to extricate the third worker.
Two of the workers were taken to Duke University Medical Center. There is no word on their condition.
The workers were installing gas tanks for a new gas station on the site.
This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
