BUFFALO, N.Y. — Bees play a big role in pollinating our food. A single bee colony can pollinate 300 million flowers in a day. About 75% of the world’s crops depend on pollinators.

In North America, bees help produce at least 90 crops. What better day than Earth Day to find ways to help them thrive?! The Buffalo Museum of Science came to the Spectrum News 1 studio to share two easy ways to make a difference.

  1. Creating Butterfly Watering Areas
  2. Bug Hotels

These are just a couple of ways to help ensure insects get the nutrition and shelter they need.

Another thing to think about is climate change. Last year was the hottest year on record. In a study recently published in Nature Climate Change, scientists found that 65% of the insect populations they examined could go extinct over the next century.

Plastic waste is another issue for our environment. Every day, the equivalent of 2,000 garbage trucks full of plastic are dumped into the world's oceans, rivers and lakes, according to the UN Environment Programme.

These two activities take what you have and reuse it, cutting back on waste and plastic consumption.
