LANSING, N.Y. -- It was a packed house in Lansing Town Hall as residents shared their thoughts about a controversial expansion project at the Cargill Salt Mine on Friday.

The company is looking to build a new mine and ventilation shaft, and said they say they may be forced to close without the improvements.

Some residents are concerned about the company's request for a $640,000 sales tax break, saying it is an unfair burden on taxpayers.

But others, like Connie Wilcox, say the project is needed to keep the jobs local.

"It needs to happen for the economic development of Lansing,” said Wilcox. “I mean forget about the tax abatement, the economy is going to thrive because of the fact that with the construction crews that are going to come in to do this, they're going to spend their money in Lansing."

The industrial development agency is expected to vote on the issue at their meeting next Thursday.
