New York Attorney General Letitia James on Tuesday filed briefs opposing moves by Idaho and Texas to restriction abortion, leading a multi-state effort to oppose the measures.

The filings come weeks after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down the Roe v. Wade decision, sending abortion policy back to state governments.

The filings in legal challenges to both state provisions comes as New York officials, more broadly, have pledged to make New York a state where abortion services can be access and preserved.

“An assault on people’s rights anywhere is an attack on people’s rights everywhere. The actions being taken by Idaho and Texas are being watched by other states throughout the nation, and by anti-choice forces here in New York,” James said. “States that are restricting access to abortion care are endangering people’s lives and creating a public health crisis. Access to safe abortion care is about saving lives and recognizing the right to bodily autonomy and privacy. New York will continue to lead the way and fight for abortion rights and reproductive freedom for all Americans.”

Opponents of abortion in New York have criticized efforts to strengthen abortion measures and use state money to help providers expand their facilities as well as increase security. The Catholic Conference has urged lawmakers and elected officials to instead focus on policies that could help families.
