Democratic Rep. Anthony Brindisi holds a 9 percentage point lead over Republican former Rep. Claudia Tenney in a Siena College/Syracuse.com poll of likely voters released on Thursday morning.

The poll showed Brindisi drawing 48 percent of support with Tenney receiving 39 percent. Libertarian candidate Keith Price drew 4 percent in the poll.

Tenney is challenging Brindisi for the seat she lost to him two years ago in a district that stretches from Central New York and the Mohawk Valley to the state's Southern Tier region.

President Donald Trump easily carried the district four years ago, winning by more than 10 percentage points over Democrat Hillary Clinton. But the poll on Thursday suggests a closer race: former Vice President Joe Biden and Trump are essentially in a dead heat, with the Democratic nominee drawing 45 percent of the vote, and the incumbent president at 44 percent.

The result is well within the poll's 5 percentage point margin of error.

Trump campaigned for Tenney in the district two years ago, hosting a fundraiser for her in Utica. Members of the president's family also campaigned for Tenney that year.

Brindisi is viewed more favorably by voters, the poll found, drawing a favorability rating of 51 percent to 35 percent. Tenney, meanwhile, is under water in that category: 52 percent of voters as well as 51 percent of independents, have an unfavorable view of her.

In the head to head matchip, Brindisi also draws more support from independents than Tenney, 47 percent to 33 percent.

Most voters, 81 percent, are locked in on their choices for November.

The poll of 383 likely voters was conducted from September 27 to October 4.
