DALLAS — ‘Tis the season for sneezing, runny noses and coughing. Allergy season can be debilitating for many, and a new study ranked the most challenging cities to live in with seasonal allergies, with Dallas making it pretty far up on the list.

A report by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America ranked areas based on pollen levels from trees, grasses and weeds, the use of over-the-counter allergy medication and the number of allergy specialists in the area.

Dallas ranked at No. 13, and according to the report, researchers said the city has worse than average pollen levels, medicine use and overall allergies.

According to the report, tree pollen causes most spring allergy symptoms as it is the first pollen to appear. Austin, which was ranked further down at 45, was reported to have one of the highest sums of “high” and “very high” days for tree pollen in 2024.

Ranking at the top spot was Wichita, Kansas. Houston, Texas came in at the 26th spot.

The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America provided a few tips to stay prepared for this allergy season:

  • During your pollen season, check pollen counts daily

  • Remove your shoes before entering your home.

  • Change and wash clothes after outdoor activities

  • Shower before bed to keep pollen out of your bedding

  • Use allergy medicine to control your symptoms

  • Ask your doctor about immunotherapy
