Syracuse Fire Chief Michael Monds and the Washington Neighborhood Watch Group hosted a meeting Tuesday night to discuss what caused the fire at the St. Anthony Convent and Mother House and what will happen to the site.

“For the nuns to give their property to someone they trusted in for an undervalued price because [the owner] said he wanted to make it a nursing home," said Katherine Scott, an area resident for 70 years.

She added it is a beautiful and sacred place and said that “the owner should pay for the demolition of the property, not the taxpayers.”

“There are a lot of concerns and a lot of issues with this property,” said Monds.

Monds said there is a plan to transfer the property to a new owner in June, whose plans include apartments to remain on the site.

"People are spending a lot of time and working long hours to make this property safe for housing," Monds added.

The building will be demolished at some point because of safety issues, said Monds.
