The first reported case of measles in New York state, outside of New York City, has been confirmed by the New York State Health Department and the Wadsworth Lab in Albany.

The department says that the patient is a 5-year-old who lives in Suffolk County.

This marks the third case in New York state so far this year.

As of last week, the CDC says that there are more than 200 reported cases in a dozen states.

Measles is a highly contagious respiratory disease that causes rash and fever, and can reduce the immune system's ability to fight off other infections.

This confirmation comes as a newborn with measles is among the growing number of people infected in the Texas outbreak.

This is prompting a health expert reminder that both newborns and pregnant women are at a higher risk of complications from the virus than the general public.

According to officials in Texas, at least 2 pregnant women were infected.

Eighty-one cases are being reported in children ages 4 and younger. According to the CDC, those cases are being found in at least a dozen states.
