New York state and Elmira authorities are investigating a fire that destroyed the First Baptist Church late Thursday night, Elmira Fire Chief Andrew Mallow said.

Multiple fire departments from around the area were called to a heavy blaze in the second and third floor of the more than 130-year-old church at 121 W. Church St. An Elmira police officer spotted and reported the fire to 911 units at around 10:13 p.m. Thursday, Mallow said.

No injuries were reported.

“The church structure is a total loss,” Mallow said in a statement on Friday.

The New York State Office of Fire and Prevention and Control, along with members of Elmira fire and police departments, are investigating the incident, he said.

Demolition of parts of the church are expected to start Friday afternoon or evening by removing tall portions that pose a safety hazard, Mallow said.

Assisting the Elmira FD were the West Elmira, Southport, Elmira Heights and Horseheads fire departments, Elmira Police and Erway Ambulance.
