It’s been one year since massive amounts of rain caused devastating flooding in Orange County.

Some people are still dealing with the impact of the storm which brought measurements of up eight inches of rain in some areas and left one person dead.

What You Need To Know

  • Rainfall of up to eight inches in some areas caused devastating flooding last year

  • One person lost their life in flood waters

  • Highland Falls residents said more funding assistance is needed as they continue to recover and prepare for the potential of future floods

“This is all out of the pocket, everything. And I got it back together. I've been working just about every single weekend on my home,” said Mervin Livsey of Highland Falls.

Livsey’s entire backyard, including a wall meant to block brook water from coming in, was destroyed, as well as his basement with many valuables and appliances.

“It was just unbelievable that something like this was happening,” Livsey said.

His neighbor, Brian Fredrickson, is dealing with a similar situation, with a wall and his entire backyard being washed away, taking out the first floor of his home.

“The community did come together. But we are a year after now, and the community can only do so much right now with the damage that was done to the private residences,” Fredrickson said.

The neighbors are still looking for funding assistance as more work needs to be done on their homes and to prevent future flooding.

“I don't know how you look at the area and say, ‘no,’” Fredrickson said. “It's just going to exacerbate the problem more and more until basically there's no reason to live here.”

The residents said cleanup will continue for quite some time.
