New numbers, based off wastewater surveillance data and other metrics, show a significant spike in COVID-19 in New York state after Thanksgiving.
State Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald says about a million and a half New Yorkers have received the latest vaccine, which may sound like a lot, but according to the state's dashboard, represents just under 10%
He also expressed great concern that only 27% of all nursing home residents are newly vaccinated.
With the upcoming holidays, parties and gatherings, McDonald is offering some simple, common-sense advice to avoid another spike like the one after Thanksgiving.
"If you don't want to be sick for the holidays, grab the COVID vaccine,” he said. “When I think back to the pandemic, so much was taken from all of us. I don't want to lose one more Christmas to this and I don't want anybody to be missing out on Christmas either, so I hope people take advantage of the opportunity in front of us."
McDonald also points out quite simply that the virus is treatable so if someone does test positive, they're advised to talk to their doctor about what medicine may be right for them.
