For the second time this month, a New York State trooper has been shot in Broome County.

State Police say the latest incident happened in the village of Deposit just after 9 p.m. Wednesday when troopers responded to a domestic dispute call on Sunrise Terrace.

The trooper, identified by police as Ryan Thorp, was shot in the arm and taken to Wilson Memorial Hospital for surgery. Thorp is currently in stable condition.

For fellow troopers, it's news that hits close to home.

"We're very tight-knit with the people that we do go to their homes and to their calls and we're very tight-knit with the community, so it's hard to hear when you hear that a co-worker of yours has been hurt, but it also does shows the inherent dangers in our job. There's a lot of danger," said Aga Dembinska, State Police Troop C public information officer.

Police have identified the suspect as 44-year-old Scott A. Mawhiney, of Deposit. He was arraigned on a first-degree attempted murder charge Thursday morning and is being held in Broome County Jail without bail.

Two weeks ago, Trooper Becky Seager was shot in the hip while trying to check on the welfare of a man in Colesville. The suspect ran off and it led to a manhunt in the Colesville area, just 15 miles from where this latest incident happened. That suspect was eventually caught and charged.

Seager was treated and released from the hospital.

Neighbors living nearby said unfortunately, events like these are a stark reality, even in a small town.

"In my mind, I wish there was more gun control. I dont have the answers for that, but I really feel that comes into play and hopefully somehow we can come to some agreement with that," said resident Larry Blaho.

Fellow troopers say this is a reminder of just how dangerous their job can be.

"It just shows how quickly a regular, routine call can go wrong and the trooper that's at home, Becky Seager that was involved in the incident last week, she's home healing with her family so now we have her in our thoughts as well as Trooper Thorp," said Dembinska.

Unlike the manhunt two weeks ago, the suspect in this case was arrested right away.

At this time, Trooper Throp is said to be in good spirits and recovering in the hospital with his family.
