There's a new K-9 search and rescue officer on SUNY Delhi's campus. Meet Redd.
"Redd is about 12 weeks old, and she is a Dutch Shepherd," said Officer Peter Czaplicki.
Officer Czaplicki is Redd's handler. He got the pup after talking with his department about hiring a K-9 officer.
"She is a new part of the family and it's going to be a lot of fun getting to work with her. It's going to be fun getting to work with her and see how she changes, see how she grows, and works," said Czaplicki.
Before Redd, University police would need to call out to other agencies for K-9 officers. But not anymore.
"She's gonna be an explosive detections dog," Czaplicki said. "So she'll be running around during events and bigger gatherings, things like that to make sure everyone on the campus is safe."
Redd is getting ready for training by socializing with students and staff on campus. Some welding students built a kennel that will make Redd's job a little easier.
"We're always excited to have more projects come in that expose our students to real world opportunities," said welding instructor Cassie VanBlarcum.
Redd's name has a special meaning. Following the tradition of State Police, Redd is named after officer Bruce Redden, a deputy chief at Stony Brook. Deputy Redden lost his life to cancer this past January.
"It's one of the things that a lot of agencies do. And I know state police, that's one of their things. All of their dogs are named after unfortunately deceased troopers, so we thought that would be a great way to honor him," said Czaplicki.
Redd will start training late next year, beginning her journey to become a protector of the college.
