Parked outside Apalachin's West Learning Center is a mobile primary care bus from Lourdes.

"We're here to provide primary care and psychiatric care to kids here at the BOCES program," said Sam Wyld, a pediatrician at Lourdes.

It's almost like you're in the usual doctor's office for a visit.

"We have two complete exam rooms, a full-functioning waiting room, a restroom and that kind of thing," said Wyld.

Kids in the Reclaim program don't always have the best access to primary care. That's something Nellie Smith wanted to change.

"It was really hard for our kids to get to clinics. For that purpose, but also a lot of their basic medical needs end up getting met at primary care locations, walk-ins and it hasn't been consistent," said Smith.

Now as the supervisor for Broome-Tioga BOCES social workers, Smith used to work at Lourdes. This mobile bus has been operating for a couple of years now, so an idea clicked.

"When I got over here, I realized that Lourdes mission in motion was very applicable to what we were doing. So I reached out to my old co-workers at Lourdes and asked if we could pilot the program to get the needs of our BOCES reclaim students met," said Smith.

That request was answered. And now, students can get the care they need, right at school.

"So parents don't have to miss work, spend money on gas, transportation is an issue. So the kids get on the bus and get their health care but parents can actually attend the visit remotely," he said.
